Management By Walking Around
Management by walking around (MBWA) emphasizes the importance of interpersonal contact, open appreciation, and recognition. It is one of the most important ways to build civility and performance in the workplace.
MBWA originated in the 70s by Hewlett Packard. The idea was to get managers out from behind desks and visible and interactive with their employees. It is more thorough a style than the name suggests. The idea is that walking around allows for the managers to ask and answer questions of staff, share experiences, and help improve approachability, trust, business knowledge, accountability, morale and productivity. It gives managers a more holistic view of what is happening around them.
Managers who practice MBWA are generally seen as inspiring team leaders walking around communicating with their employees and helping their team achieve their goals. (Peters & Waterman, 1982)
